Strike at the Wind Annual Art Dinner

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

Pembroke, NC - The Annual Strike at the Wind Art Auction and Banquet will be held this year on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the James B. Chavis University Center on the campus of UNC-Pembroke.

The event will be very special this year, with two artists! Gene Locklear (Lumbee) has made his name not only as one of the most acclaimed Native artists today, but also has a long list of professional accomplishments. He will honor our dinner with a painting for auction that features a scene from the drama. His painting will also incorporate work from the evening’s other featured artist, Senora Lynch (Haliwa-Saponi).  Senora’s work has been included in exhibits by the Smithsonian Institute, the N.C. Museum of History and was included in venues at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She hand coils and builds pottery pieces and decorates them with images representing Native American themes and traditional stories. Handmade clay turtles, decorated with elaborate images on their shells, are among her popular pieces.  "These things give life to my people," says Senora. They also give life to her art.

Senora’s original work will also be available for auction that evening, along with prints of Mr. Locklear’s painting.

The menu for this special evening will include beef tenderloin, roasted red potatoes, green beans almondine, tossed salad, cheesecake, coffee and tea.  The event will begin at 6:30 PM.  Entertainment will be provided by various local artists, including Willie French Lowery and the Oxendines.

Tickets are $30 per person. If you are unable to attend, but would like more information about “Strike at the Wind”, please contact Malinda Maynor Lowery, 910-521-0835, or email Malinda@strikeatthewind.com.
